The team chose their problem by thinking about water issues that impact themselves or someone they know. Rishi has family in Bengaluru - grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins - and the team learned from internet searching that there is a major water crisis in Bengaluru. Some experts estimate that it will be uninhabitable before our team graduates from high school! So the kids felt this was the problem they should work on - fast.
The team chose their solution on Wednesday, 10/4 after researching several methods for addressing water scarcity. The team wanted a technical solution that was very narrow so that they would have the best chance of understanding it and explaining it to the judges by November 11th. The also believe rain "trees" would be a big help given that Bengaluru gets about as much rain as Glastonbury (just more in the summer and less in the winter), so rainwater collection seems viable. Fog nets or more wells, other ideas, do not seem viable based on what they learned from internet research and interviewing Rishi's mom. Organizing a technology expo displaying all available rain collection technology and water consumption monitoring technology for officials and businesses in Bengaluru is the fall-back plan if this rain collection solution ends up looking like a bad idea.
